Making Online Content Accessible for All - Cohort Five
Making Online Content Accessible for All is a 6-week faciliated course designed to equip professionals with the skills to create and evaluate accessible digital content.
Focusing on the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2), this course teaches practical strategies to make e-Learning and online courses usable for all learners, including those with disabilities.
Over six weeks, participants will explore best practices for ensuring accessibility through hands-on activities, scenarios, and evaluation tools.
Facilitated by Dr. Nicole L'Etoile, CPACC , in partnership with the Instructional Design Institute, with excellent resources, self-paced segments, weekly connections, and feedback.
Learning Objectives:
- Apply the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 standards to design and evaluate digital content for accessibility.
- Gain skills using digital tools to audit and remediate accessibility issues, aligning with standards and best practices.
- Create a product that demonstrates proficiency in using the most common accessibility tools to ensure inclusive design practices.
Course Outline:
- Week 1: Learn the basics of digital accessibility, exploring models of disabilities, the significance of accessibility, and an introduction to the WCAG 2.2 guidelines.
- Week 2: Focus on creating content that is perceivable for all learners, with emphasis on visual and auditory accessibility strategies such as alt text, captions, and sufficient color contrast.
- Week 3: Design operable, navigable, and user-friendly interfaces that cater to a broad audience, including those using assistive technologies.
- Week 4: Simplify language and structure to enhance the clarity and predictability of your content.
- Week 5: Ensure your content is compatible with a variety of technologies and devices, including screen readers.
- Week 6: Evaluate and audit your digital content using top industry tools.
- Final Project: Submit an audit of an online course or digital content, demonstrating your ability to apply the WCAG 2.2 standards and neurodivergent considerations.

Hands-On with NVDA Screen Reader: Accessibility for Instructional Designers
Experience your courses the way your learners using screen readers do. This 2-day interactive workshop gives instructional designers and course creators a hands-on introduction to NVDA, one of the most widely used free screen readers.

What to Expect
- Explore NVDA’s reading modes and settings: practicing navigating digital content using keyboard commands.
- Apply NVDA to test for high-level accessibility issues in course content, including headings, focus order, alt text, and accurate screen reader output.
- Evaulate e-Learning modules in LMS and authoring tools, identify common accessibility barriers, document findings for remediation.
- Experience content from a non-visual perspective and develop empathy for screen reader users.
